Amazon India has appointed Fashionara’s co-founder Arun Sirdeshmukh as the head of its fashion vertical. He has filled the position left vacant by Vikas Purohit, who had joined rival Paytm in December 2015 (resigned in June 2016) after leaving Amazon.
Susan Saideman, VP – Global Vendor Management, Amazon.com said, “As we continue to grow and gain momentum, we are very excited to have Arun Sirdeshmukh join us to lead Amazon Fashion in India.”
Amazon takes its fashion business seriously, as it is one of the biggest & fastest growing categories. The American etailer has taken various steps to expand its fashion vertical be it creating specialty stores or roping in designers and international labels.
The etailer also dedicated its first sale post-FDI to fashion.
In May, IOS reported that Fashionara has shut down, in spite of no formal announcement. Investors and co-founder Darpan Munjal had already left the company. With the other co-founder Arun Sirdeshmukh joining Amazon, it is now confirmed that the fashion portal has pulled down its shutter.
Sirdeshmukh now has a mammoth task ahead. At present, Myntra (owned by Flipkart) is the online fashion leader. And the rivalry between Flipkart and Amazon is at its peak. The new fashion head will have to ensure that sales of Amazon Fashion multiply and the American etailer maintain its growth trajectory.
Flipkart too roped in ex-CFO Kalyan Krishnamurthy as Business Head to save its business. It will be interesting to see how these experienced senior managers will defeat their rivals.
