We celebrate a lot in this country, festivals, national holidays and special days devoted to love and historic figures. But, on the 8th of March every year we dedicate the day to some of the most extraordinary people in the world, women! Women have come a long way since the initial days of independence and democracy. Daughters are recognized as cherished family members. More women are opting for higher education. Compared to the urban scene, more rural women make up the female workforce. Best of all, the gender wage gap is shrinking every day.
This may be the 21st century, but women are still undermined in India and on some days gender equality is an uphill battle. Despite culture and tradition confining them to their homes to look after the family, women have excelled in every way. There isn’t much left that women haven’t done already. Ecommerce is another notable achievement she can add to the list!
Last year we brought you the Womentrepreneur series, where we covered three very fabulous female ecommerce entrepreneurs. They managed to set up and popularize their brands despite the challenges. In fact they played to their strengths to conquer their segments of online retail. Women are born entrepreneurs! Just look at the way a mother controls a home. She cooks, cleans and looks after the family meticulously, without a single day of training.
There are a couple of ecommerce lessons we can all learn from feminine qualities. Women are born with entrepreneur qualities and these can be capitalized anytime they see fit. Put it together with ecommerce and she becomes unstoppable! Ladies you already know these things, so men, listen up!
If you haven’t noticed, women are naturally inquisitive. They always want to know more and stay in the loop. Some may say it’s just gossip or amiable chit chat that they’re into. Call it whatever you like, but remember, it is working wonders for them. So stop judging! Instead listen and read as much as you can about the latest in ecommerce. Get in touch with people in online retail, read about seller interviews and accordingly prepare your plans to penetrate the online market.
Ever wonder what makes women so business savvy? It’s not the look but the attitude. They possess the quality of shrewdness. It doesn’t mean they are rigid about business; it just shows they know what they want! Women are known for getting what they want, which means they must be doing it right. So keep your eyes on the prize. Don’t give in easily, it’s a jungle out there and only the shrewd survive.
Great things come to those who wait. Ask any woman. She’s been waiting for equality for so long she can almost taste it! Business is not a sure shot route to success. There are risks and uncertainties that can knock you down. You need to want it bad enough to try again. Women have been discriminated for years. Yet they fought their way through to get to the top. It certainly wasn’t easy, but they knew giving up would take away any realistic shot at greatness.
Subtlety is a woman’s strong suit and she knows how to use it well. It’s the little things that make the most difference. You want to be here for the long run? Make an effort to ensure it. Throw in words of encouragement so your team feels appreciated, give your consumers a fair amount of attention, ensure product quality and never forget the little details.
Every woman is unique and special in her own little way. She knows it and she’s not afraid to show it. That does not mean everyone else lacks that special something. All you need to do is find it and incorporate it into your business. For example, you are good at managing people and delegating tasks, you can negotiate well or you have a creative mind. Use your skills to drive your business. Be resourceful, it is what fuels a business and helps it become stronger.
Women’s day is an ode to the special women in one’s life. But how about also giving a second thought to the above-mentioned qualities (and more) that come naturally to help their ecommerce business? Adopting these could probably advance your operations too. If you decide to do so, don’t forget to let us know how it’s working out.
To our women sellers out there, Happy Women’s Day! Wish you more luck and success in your ventures.
