Amazon’s 2016 Republic Day Sale revenue tripled

Post the Diwali and New Year festivities, the next biggest slot for online sales is the Republic Day celebrations. All the ecommerce players put on their best game face and got ready for a fierce battle. Now that the battle is over, post-sale analysis has started.

Amazon India recently shared the company’s ‘Great Indian Republic Day Sale’ figures.

Republic day sale revenue tripled

The ecommerce leader disclosed that its revenue tripled during this year’s Republic Day Sale compared to last year. The company also witnessed that orders from Tier I and Tier II cities increased around the 3 day sale, held from January 21st to January 23rd.

Some other highlights of Amazon’s ‘Great Indian Republic Day Sale’:

  • Mobile was the top selling category, apparel followed next
  • 65% of orders came from cities like Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Nagpur and Patna
  • Amazon Fashion sale witnessed 4.8-fold rise in order size from Tier II cities
  • 70% of traffic came from its mobile platform
  • Handbags, Luggage, Watches, and Apparel had the highest growth rate
  • 9-fold increase in sales of most product categories

Gadgets remain the top selling category across all ecommerce sites

Be it Amazon, Snapdeal or Flipkart, electronic gadgets was the hot selling category this Republic Day sale season. Mobile phones, cameras, Bluetooth devices, memory cards, video games and home appliances sold fast and in huge numbers.

Rahul Taneja, VP- Category management, Snapdeal stated, “The response from the public is fantastic for mobile phones ranging from Rs 10,000 like Lenovo A6000. Apart from mobile phones, JBL headphones and Canon 1200D cameras, Bluetooth audio equipment and sound bass of JBL demand are rising.”

Flipkart which witnessed 30% growth in traffic revealed, “Samsung Galaxy On5 and On7 sold close to a lakh units with 10 times spike in air fryers. Memory cards were the top-selling item with 300 percent growth in this segment.”

The ecommerce biggie also said home appliances and large appliances were among the top searched categories on its portal.
