Clash of the titans – again – as Flipkart and Amazon to meet in the ring in the third round of sale

Online sellers who missed the festive sales of Flipkart and Amazon need not fret. Both marketplaces are holding a third round of sale events in the coming days. Is it a celebration of a good sale in the last two rounds or a desperation to meet targeted figures? Both companies’ sale will run parallel – starting on October 25th midnight and winding up on midnight October 28th.

Flipkart says that it is the ‘largest sale season of the year’, and therefore plans to make the most of it. Says Smriti Ravichandran, Director of category design and management Flipkart,

“Big Billion Day is our largest sale period of year—having said that, October in total is the largest season in the year in terms of consumer demand. And we plan to finish the season with our Diwali sale next week.”

Amazon is planning flash sales and discounts, while Flipkart is banking on cashbacks to draw in the crowds. Ravichandran opines,

“It’s not always only about discounts. Even there it should ideally be giving cash to the consumer because giving gift cards and other things is a really roundabout way of doing it. It’s great to get some loyalty and repeat customers, but you should not be overdoing it.”

Flipkart has an exclusive deal with Samsung to sell its On Nxt phone. Amazon has a similar arrangement with LG.

A good run

Amazon claims that the second sale it held has done well. The company includes a sale worth Rs. 1 crore, 200 new sellers, and a greater reach to its list of achievements. Buyers from smaller cities have shopped a great deal this year, according to Amazon and Snapdeal (20 time increase in orders from tier 2 and 3 cities).

Sellers disagree

While they are happy with the increased traction, sellers feel that some measures were unnecessary. Such as Snapdeal’s insistence on sellers using the new packaging, issues with logistics, and returns. However, sellers also found an increase in new customers and better product visibility.

All said and done, sellers will get another stab at bettering their sales in the next few days.
