US-based Amazon, which is turning into India’s favourite online marketplace, is steadily moving towards capturing the offline shoppers as well. The company’s project titled ‘Udaan’ was launched in 2015, to promote assisted buying. Buyers in rural and semi-urban areas can browse Amazon’s desktop website at designated stores, and even get help from the shop assistants to place their order and complete their purchase.
Apparently, the hard work has paid off. The project has done well over the last few months. Amazon’s representative said,
“The initial response was beyond our expectation since the stores not only started getting high footfalls from interested customers but also from people who wanted to sign up and open more stores. The program has scaled up dramatically in the last one year.”
Amazon has been connecting with companies to work on Udaan. Recently, it tied-up with Storeking to extend its reach. Apart from that, Smart Buy, Vakrangee, and ConnectIndia are partners for the project, operating in 75 locations across 13 states.
Vakrangee is doing its bit to help progress of the scheme. Dinesh Nandwana, MD and CEO says,
“Currently Amazon services are available in 465 kendras (out of 20,677) and the target is to offer it in 10,000 centres by 30th June. We are also targeting 10,000 orders per day. We plan to tie up with IOC (Indian Oil Corporation) to have our Kendra at the petrol pumps. Amazon will be the indirect beneficiary of this tie-up as well.”
Amazon’s approach to net users who do not shop online is a smart move. Finding partners to fuel the movement is a good deal. Hopefully online sellers will benefit from Udaan and find greater number of buyers.
