We have been following the Alibaba/ Paytm journey for quite some time. There now seems to be a genuine rivalry to speak of. As online sellers from China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and the US find ways to enter India, online marketplace ShopClues is making a number of collaborations to strengthen its position.
Certainly the most high profile tie-up and definitely the most talked about is the DHgate alliance. While IOS reported on this partnership last May, It is understood that ShopClues is now focusing more on Business to Business (B2B). While there is no talk of any acquisition or stakes being sold, it is understood that DHgate will simply be listing its products on the ShopClues platform.
“In business-to-business (B2B) segment, there is no online organised player in the country right now. The market is being created for the online businesses,” said Sanjay Sethi, co-founder and CEO of Shopclues.
“From China we are getting around 10,000 SKUs (stock keeping units) listed. It is not a retail business and the target audience for this business are other businesses in India,” remarked Sethi.
Recently we heard about US retail giant, Walmart looking to take on Amazon in India by associating with local players such as Flipkart and Snapdeal. It is reported that German wholesale firm, Metro Cash & Carry is also eyeing the potential market. While ShopClues is focusing on B2B business, there is no question that global players are rapidly fixing greater attention towards India.
