Flipkart app hits 50mn on GooglePlay store

Ecommerce leader Flipkart has just taken a giant leap forward by announcing that it has clocked up 50 million app installs on the GooglePlay store. The Flipkart app is also ranked as the highest shopping app on GooglePlay store, ahead of rivals Amazon, Paytm and Snapdeal.

Flipkart/Google synergy

In November of last year, Flipkart re-launched its mobile website with the help of Google and by December, Flipkart became the most search Indian word on Google. The latest news could be seen as greater synergy between the two, especially after Google pulled the plug on its own Great Online Shopping Festival in November to focus on its core competence.

Flipkart v/s. Amazon traffic

In December, AppAnnie revealed Flipkart’s app was ahead of the competition. A SimilarWeb study produced more favourable results for Flipkart. On the other hand Its focus on app-only during the Big Billion Days sale allowed Amazon to gain the advantage on desktop, which was brought to light by ComScore. Amazon wasted no time in gifting its customers a voucher to say thank you.

Amazon’s desktop traffic was catching up with Flipkart’s for quite sometime, but it was only during the festive period that it was achieved. It is worth noting, Amazon enticed customers to shop on its app by offering gold coin prizes and the app treasure hunt, but it did not insist on app.

Mixed strategy

Due to smartphones being sold at throw away prices in the country, it is strongly believed that mcommerce is the future of online retail in India. Just this week, we heard that the cheapest smartphone in the world, that is the freedom 251 smartphone could be purchased for Rs. 251. Despite the smartphone phenomenon, Flipkart and more recently fashion etailer Myntra have realised that you cannot just focus on app-only strategy.
