Efficient logistics service proves to be key differentiator for Amazon in 2015

Online marketplace, Amazon had an amazing 2015. The US company which is trying its level best to conquer the Indian market, credits a large part of this growth to its strength in logistics.

Amazon invested heavily to make its delivery network stand out from the crowd, by providing a speedy and reliable service. Despite its global expertise in ecommerce, problematic issues with infrastructure such as bad roads, made Amazon improvise and it is now sharing these philosophies with the world.

Amazon’s India presence:

  • Offers over 40 million products, spread across 35 categories
  • Delivers to more than 19,000 postal areas in 2,100 cities and towns
  • Added 8 warehouses in 2015 and currently has 21 sprinkled across the country
  • Has 52,000 third party sellers, with 90% of them using ‘Fulfilment by Amazon’ service

“In 2015, (fast and reliable delivery) has come out as a key thing that separates Amazon from others. If you look at Diwali, many customers made this observation that Amazon is fast, Amazon is reliable. During our Diwali sales, customers opting for paid delivery grew 300% over last year. We have the largest in-stock selection in India that is available for fast delivery. More than 70% of our demand is eligible for fast delivery. We see the right metrics internally and on customer adoption,” said Amit Agarwal, country head, Amazon India.

Force to be reckoned with (in 2016)

Amazon spent excessively on advertising in the last twelve months, which has helped it to reach the number 1 position in terms of web traffic and its app has also been gaining increased traction. During the Great Indian Festive sale, it offered gold coins daily to app customer competition winners.

In 2016, Amazon aims to surpass Flipkart and become the undisputed leader in India and also make the country, Amazon’s 2nd largest territory after the US globally. To execute its mission, it is pursuing an online to offline project ‘Udaan’ in a big way, which would make it more accessible and customer centric. The ecommerce marketplace recently revealed the 3 pillars of its successful customer centric approach, which has brought many admirers.

So which are the up coming categories for Amazon?

Fashion, home appliances and home furnishings are the three hot tips for 2016!

“Our fastest growing category has been fashion that has seen growth of anywhere between 500% and 700% this year. Of late, we have been seeing a lot of growth in consumable and home appliances and home furnishings. Gift certificates is another category that is growing more than 500%. We are seeing growth across categories, but these are the few categories that are growing disproportionately faster,” stated Agarwal.
