Snapdeal buys Letsgomo, inching closer to strong mobile technology

Continuing its focus on mobile, Snapdeal has acquired mobility solutions start-up Letsgomo. This Techcircle report states that the move will help Snapdeal in amplifying its mobile offerings. The report quotes Rohit Bansal, co-founder of Snapdeal, who says that the company’s focus is on giving its customers good user experience across all platforms. The Letsgomo acquisition will help reach this end.

The Guragaon based Letsgomo Labs is involved in creating mobile applications. It also works on mobile solutions for user experience, strategy, mobile sites, creating apps, and hosting them.

Mobile traffic seems to form the majority for most ecommerce sites. This ET news on the acquisition says that 75% of Snapdeal’s orders are from mobile transactions.

The mobile trend

All ecommerce companies are trying to get their toehold in the mobile arena. Myntra recently went app-only after shutting down its website. Its parent company Flipkart has dropped strong hints of following suit in a short while. While many ecommerce websites have an app for the customers’ benefit, they do not share the thought of totally giving up the web.

Apart from the regular offering of apparel, electronics, fashion and the like, Snapdeal aims to push its boundaries beyond these offerings. It also deals with finances (personal loans), realty (apartments and houses), and mobile recharge services among others.

Snapdeal has been focussing on the mobile platform of late. Its recent acquisitions clearly show that it has its sights set on the mobile sphere. Snapdeal acquired FreeCharge in April and Martmobi in May. The FreeCharge deal, which cost Rs. 2,870 crores, has put Snapdeal in the mobile services. Snapdeal users can now recharge their mobiles, DTH and Data Cards. FreeCharge offers users discount coupons of major brands for every recharge.

With the acquisition of FreeCharge, Snapdeal claims to be the largest m-commerce company, according to this news on Your Story.

Snapdeal’s focus

Snapdeal clearly wants a bigger share of the online commerce pie. It plans to work on building mobile technology with the Letsgomo buy. CEO Kunal Bahl has stated clearly that if Snapdeal cannot work out a solution internally, it will acquire companies that have a solution. He has stated in an interview with Live Mint that they would lose too much time if they work on everything by themselves.

Snapdeal has also hired senior hands in the managerial rungs. Alumni from Unilever, Airtel, Cisco, among others have joined the ranks at Snapdeal.

The ecommerce company’s footprint is gaining prominence. Looks like it is well on its way to leading the mobile race.
