That online fashion is the hottest selling category in the Indian ecommerce landscape has not changed for a while now. But what’s changing are the ways in which online players are reaching out to customers to tap into their demand for any and every kind of fashion.
Recently, we read about Amazon sponsoring India Fashion Week, indicating it was ready to go beyond the online space to attract the fashion-conscious Indian customers. And now we hear Amazon India will launch a designer store to provide a platform for aspiring designers who can’t afford to lease physical spaces.
“Fashion is one of our top three categories on Amazon and the challenge is to keep up with the growth,” said Vikas Purohit, head of fashion at Amazon India. “There is an ecosystem of graduates from schools like NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology), who can’t afford to buy a shop or invest in rentals. A lot of dreams die there. We are giving these designers a platform for their work and only charge a commission based on sale.”
Amazon’s designer store will be launched with around 20 designers on board. But it will encourage more budding designers and craftsmen to think about doing business online to make the most of the demand from the industry.
Online marketplaces like Myntra have now begun to pay more attention to profitability. So it’s only natural that they would turn to exploring different avenues with the fashion segment to capitalize on the higher margins and demand.
