Technology Trump: Jabong to launch research lab

So far, the online retail industry in India has been focusing more on the ‘commerce’ in ecommerce. However, with major technical fails experienced during big sales such as ‘The Big Billion Day’ and so on, it is high time this industry pulls up its socks and gives importance to developing the right ecommerce technology as well.
It seems like Jabong wants to be the pioneer of technology in the online retail industry in India. According to recent reports, the fashion platform Jabong will be launching a laboratory specially dedicated to focusing on technology development in Bengaluru. The ‘Jabong Lab’ project seems to be quite ambitious, as the company plans to hire about 1000 employees to work for this project, 25 of whom have already begun working. This lab is also tied-up with a separate research and development centre in Gurgaon.
History repeats itself
This is not the first time that Jabong is going out of its way to improve research and technology in its retail operations. A couple of weeks earlier we had reported how Jabong had facilitated the designing of a special delivery bag, to be used in last-mile delivery of its packages. This special design was to reduce the health hazard to its logistics employees’ caused by carrying heaving shopping parcels around in a regular bag.
That move was lauded by experts in the field, who saw this as an excellent way of improving the ecommerce experience for all stakeholders- whether customers or employers. The fact that this whole design was suggested by a customer himself made the whole venture a great source of positive publicity for the company as well. This is beneficial as Jabong has plans to rapidly expand its reach in India.
We think this is a great move by Jabong to improve the way the online retail industry runs in India. Way to go, Jabong!
