The Role of ONDC in Helping Small Sellers and Kirana Stores

Open Network for digital commerce is an initiative of the Indian Government to democratize the commerce industry for all the aspects of the exchange of goods and services. The platform will give buyers access to retail, hospitality, mobility, food delivery, and more.

The main aim of this policy is to connect buyers, suppliers, payment, and logistic providers on a single platform. The Government received total of Rs 157 crores from different banks and financial institutions for the development of this project and this investment is expected to reach Rs 200 crore in the next few months.

Small sellers and Kirana stores play an important role in supporting local businesses, and providing employment. The ONDC will be an e-marketplace that would help small sellers, kirana stores, and retail outlets. It will also provide them with a level playing field to compete with large e-commerce companies.

The ONDC Initiative will break the dominance of Amazon, Walmart, where the listing will be based on commission payments. In comparison, the listings in ONDC will be based on several parameters, including price, consumer needs, location and more.

The ONDC platform will help small businesses and Kirana stores connect more easily with their customers, suppliers, and distributors. The pilot launch was performed in the five states including Delhi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, and Bhopal, This system will help the small traders and urban vendors to sell their products online.

The move is also aimed at promoting competition, efficiency, and quality in the market. This open network will help small businesses and Kirana stores connect more easily with their customers, suppliers, and distributors. The pilot launch was performed in the five states, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Bhopal, and Shillong, and targeted to onboard 30 million sellers and 10 million merchants covering over 100 cities by August.

One of the key benefits of opening up digital commerce is that it gives small sellers and Kirana stores access to a larger customer base across India. With ONDC, these businesses can easily set up an online store and list their products for sale. In addition, by using the common payment gateway, vendors can accept online payments from customers.

Another important feature of ONDC is that it allows for the integration of offline and online sales channels. This enables businesses to leverage their existing networks in the physical world in order to promote and sell their goods online. By tapping into this ecosystem, entrepreneurs can reach more customers and build a stronger online presence.

Final Words

The ONDC initiative is a part of the Government's larger goal to promote digital inclusion in India. By making it easier for small businesses to sell online, the hope is that more people will be able to participate in the country's booming digital economy. Thus, by allowing small sellers to join the platform and providing them with a wide variety of services, the Government has made a step towards developing India's economy as well as society.
