Chennai Metro Rail plans ecommerce counters

Once online goods are purchased, sellers have the herculean task of fulfilling the orders. This can get tricky when there is no one at home to receive them. Flipkart recently announced that it was tying up with a locker company to boost last mile delivery. Others are also finding innovative ways to improve the system.
Delhi Metro rail announced that it would facilitate the burgeoning ecommerce industry by opening special terminals at its stations for etailers to dispatch goods to customers who are not usually at home. The idea seems to have caught on fast, as Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) also plans to follow suit once the Chennai metro is complete.
Chennai Metro on track
- The 45-kilometer Chennai metro is currently being built
- The service between Koyambedu and Alandur has already commenced last year
- The area from Little Mount to Chennai airport is expected to be launched next
- Ecommerce Kiosks are already part of the property development plan
“We found that the idea of having courier counters will be happening soon in Delhi Metro Rail stations and hence we too have considered this plan. It will definitely be part of our stations but this may take some more time here. It would make sense to have it when the operations begin in a full swing. This would also attract more commuters to our stations, which will enhance safety,” an official stated.
Recently we saw India Post open special counters for eBay sellers, we even witnessed Indian railways create Ro-Ro wagons for ecommerce. We wonder which reputed organisation will be next to re-invent themselves and carve out a niche for the ecommerce industry?
