Everyone has individual tastes and preferences. Although customising for each customer may not be practical on your ecommerce site, its better to know their preferences largely and their online behaviour and usage, so that you can target them accordingly when you market your products.

If you know their common interests, you can target them more effectively. And if you know their purchases, you can feature those products more prominently on the site.
