In the physical retail world, small and medium retailers may face disadvantages and challenges when trying to expand. However, in the online retail world, they are the ones grabbing everyone’s attention without even making extra efforts to get advantages or be on par with the bigger players.

With more small and medium scale merchants turning to ecommerce for increasing their sales, all the major marketplaces want to snare them into selling on their respective platforms. Snapdeal has plans on the same line and aims to increase the number of sellers selling on its platform to 1 lakh within a year.

Currently, Snapdeal is associated with about 30,000 sellers pan India, mostly small and medium retailers. Without any external marketing, it receives about 1,000 enquiries everyday, out of which 15-20% are added. This is based only on word-of-mouth advertising from existing sellers.

The current spread across 200 towns is expected to increase to 500 this year, with increasing exposure in southern states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as also states like Gujarat. Most of them deal in apparel and electronics and account for bulk of the seller base.

Why sellers would join Snapdeal?

  • Wider customer reach– Many a times, small and medium merchants are unable to grow and expand beyond a certain limit because of the challenges of physical location. However, when selling online they have a national customer base which helps to increase their business.
  • Partnership model– Snapdeal does not levy additional charge for listing and sellers have to pay only when they make a sale. This ensures seller satisfaction and maximum profits.
  • Training– Snapdeal trains sellers with the knowledge and expertise required to sell online.
  • No parent brand– Snapdeal does not have its own brand of products or own seller so sellers don’t have to compete with it to popularize their products.
  • Reduced investments– Sellers can save on the initial investments and capital required to set up their own sites, join payment gateways, marketing and traffic generation.
  • Analytical tools- Snapdeal helps sellers track their sales records and compare them to other sellers handling same products in terms of shipping time, pricing and consumer ratings. This helps to price their own products appropriately and make their selling decisions accordingly.
