Groupon.co.in – A New Avenue for Indian Online Sellers

We have noticed an interesting new trend among Indian sellers. It seems that quite a few of them are choosing to sell their products on Groupon India. Groupon is not your typical marketplace, if you have followed the company and its services. Groupon is short for Group Coupon and the service primarily makes its money from selling products for a discount on a one time basis. This depends on the seller and factors like clearance of goods, price drops etc.

Product sales on Groupon India

Groupon and Croma:

Groupon India has tied up with Croma Retail to sell Croma’s gadgets on their site. They even have a separate URL for it (gadgets.groupon.co.in). This section offers some rather good deals on Croma’s inventory of products which range from Mobiles & Tablets, Cameras & Optics, Computers & Peripherals and Audio/Video equipment.

So what about the discounts?

Apparently, discounts can go upto 95%, according to Ankur Warikoo, CEO of Groupon India provided the merchant’s other objectives are met. These objectives can be customer acquisition, increasing footfalls to retail stores and upselling on existing offers. The company does not disclose its margin structure for merchants, site traffic and sales volumes for India due to them being a public listed company.

However, they did point out that margins in services is higher than margins on products. The company disclosed that it has signed up 6000 unique merchants in the last one and half years of operations. According to a ComScore report, Groupon India is the top deals site and has a 50% market share when it comes to unique users. The report shows that the site got  a unique visitor count of 2,303,000 in the month of June itself.
