On Saturday, the MP police reportedly arrested the officials of the popular E-commerce platform Amazon related to online ganja selling under Section 38 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The Bhind police released an official statement saying there was a contradiction between the officials’ responses. They were unable to track 20 consignments shipped to different locations through the e-commerce giant.
As per the reports, one of the Amazon executives was involved in transporting 1000kg of ganja and running the company as a seller of Stevia. Reportedly, 20kg ganja were seized by the police. The two drug dealers referred to be Suraj Singh Pawaiya and Brijendra Singh Tomar, who was supportedly involved in this case, were taken to custody in the last week.
Manoj Kumar Singh, the Superintendent of Police of Bhind District, reportedly said that the products were transported from Visakhapatnam by an unknown company with a duplicate GST number and were supplied through Gwalior, Morena and Bhopal, as well as Haridwar.
MP minister Narottam Mishra has claimed that as no guidelines were issued for online businesses, they will soon issue a guideline for MP. He also mentioned that Amazon was not cooperating with the investigation and so they will make an appeal to Amazon’s CEO, or strict action would be imposed.
Reports say that The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) submitted a letter to the Narcotics Control Bureau on Wednesday requesting to take action on the respective platform for selling the illegal items in the country. The letter also referred that the US-based e-commerce corporations were also involved in smuggling Marijuana over the marketplace. Previously, CAIT had claimed that Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal violated FDI rules and urged the government to take action against the e-commerce companies.
Besides, Amazon has stated that it does not promote any banned products and would cooperate with the investigation. According to it, their suppliers were asked to follow the applicable guidelines, and the company maintained its standards for compliance. Amazon spokesperson has assured that strict action would be taken against the sale of illegal products, and they are currently investigating the issue.
