The concept of image search is picking up pace and popularity among online shoppers. Ecommerce companies like Voonik, Flipkart, and Snapdeal, among others, have already begun the visual search feature in 2015. The latest to join the gang is online marketplace, Shopclues. The shopping portal has recently launched the image search feature on its app.
Shoppers can now upload an image of a product, and the app will come out with choices that are similar in colour, pattern and design.
“The Image Search Tool on ShopClues has already found healthy traction. Across all the e-commerce marketplaces, our technology and its results are clearly unsurpassed. Given the good response, we will be investing further in visual technologies to make the discovery of the right products faster and more effective,” said Gyanesh Sharma, AVP Engineering at Shopclues.
The good old saying, ‘a picture speaks more than a thousand words’ is spot on. Text searches can only help to a limited extent, particularly if the shopper is looking for something very specific and rare. Customers are also taking to the feature like fish to water, say experts.
Oliver Tan, CEO of Visenze, a leading visual technology firm, feels that the ease and simplicity of image search is drawing customers to it. “For one of our clients in India, we’ve witnessed a rise of about 50% in conversion rates while using visual-search technology compared to plain text search,” said Tan.
Myntra and Craftsvilla will be shortly introducing visual search. While not everyone is singing praises of the merits of visual search, the majority is in favour of the feature. Visual search is basking in the glory of being the ‘next big thing’ in ecommerce!
