Flipkart aims to capture 2% of scooter market by year-end
A recent study by the Society of Indian Automobile manufacturers (Siam) reported that a whopping 13.62 million two-wheelers were purchased by consumers in India between April 2015 and January this year.
With this kind of staggering figure, it is no wonder that ecommerce leader, Flipkart is planning to capture 2% of the market by December, to build on its Gross Merchandise Value (GMV). Flipkart would not have to deliver the vehicles as that would be done by the regional dealers.
The Road taken:
- Last April, Flipkart piloted car accessories which reportedly grew 600%
- In December, Flipkart partnered with Bajaj to sell their two-wheelers
- In February, Flipkart started selling TVS two-wheelers in Bengaluru
- By March, it plans to launch spare parts & auto mobile category
“We have piloted both four-wheelers and two-wheelers. We have been there with four wheelers and going live with two-wheelers. The size of the market is large for both. But, to begin with, two-wheelers is the logical first step because the customer base for that segment is much more. Ultimately, we will sell four-wheelers and we will sell them this year itself,” said Adarsh Menon, vice-president, electronics and automobiles, Flipkart.
