Gati launches logistics mobile app; plans ethnic ecommerce marketplace

Editor | Jun 12, 2021

To coincide with its 25th anniversary celebrations, distribution and supply chain company, Gati revamped its website to be more customer friendly and launched a mobile app. The company also confirmed its plan to foray into ecommerce, with its own ethnic online marketplace in 2016.

The new Gati mobile app assists customers:

  • To track shipments
  • Forecast shipping time
  • Calculate delivery cost
  • Identify nearest Gati office
  • Give a request for a pick up

Gati Kintetsu Express

Last year, Gati partnered with Japanese freight company Kintetsu World Express, to form Gati Kintetsu Express. It currently has an output of 30,000 deliveries per day, catering to 4 major ecommerce marketplaces, which include FlipkartSnapdeal and Amazon. It is reported that 2 more ecommerce marketplaces are set to place their trust in Gati’s delivery service. The company has opened 4 fulfilment centres in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai and plans to beef up its cold storage and logistics arm.

“We have invested Rs. 120 crore on a facility in Delhi and fleet. We are planning to put in Rs. 100 crore depending on the demand,” said Meera Madhusudan Singh, Chief Brand Custodian of Gati.

Gati E-connect

Gati’s ecommerce arm, Gati E-connect managed to make RS. 128 crore from ecommerce companies in the last financial year, which is roughly 20% of its overall turnover. It now plans to put the ecommerce experience it has gained to good use by launching an online marketplace in 2016. Gati wants to promote exotic Geographical Indication products on its site and assures that it does not plan to compete with its respected clients.

  • Gati E-connect has a reach of more than 99% of districts in India
  • Cash on Delivery and Prepaid facility are offered to 5120 pin codes
  • It delivers to 15,400 remote pin codes across the country

“With ecommerce becoming a game-changer, we expect our ecommerce division to register a 100 per cent growth, year-on-year. We are conceptualising the idea of bringing together exotic niche products that carry the geographical identification (GI) tag and offer them on the online marketplace. The new venture, which will be registered as a separate entity, is expected to go live sometime during the 2016 calendar,” stated Singh.

There are currently 211 products with the Geographical Indicator (GI) tag in the country. If you currently sell GI products, do you think you will sell more volumes on the big online marketplaces like Flipkart, Amazon or Snapdeal, or on a niche site like the proposed Gati marketplace?
