Black Friday, Cyber Monday sales set the cash counters ringing

Editor | Jun 14, 2021

The projected figure for India’s collective festive sales (between October and December) is $8 billion. On the other hand, China’s Alibaba on Singles Day made a record breaking sale of $14.3 billion and the US’s most recent Cyber Monday Sale equated to $3 billion in one day!

Amazon ruled Black Friday

Amazon emerged as the winner of the Black Friday sale on 27th November. Out of the total sales, 35% belonged to the American ecommerce giant, followed by Best Buy at 8% and Walmart at 3.35%. Amazon’s sales also tripled as compared to last year.

According to the company’s press release, Amazon devices such Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Echo, Fire Tablet and Kindle e-reader were top-selling products during the Black Friday weekend sale.

Cyber Monday Sale breaks records

As soon as the Black Friday concluded, Cyber Monday came in. And that set a new record. With online sales worth $3 billion, Cyber Monday was declared as the biggest online shopping day ever. Some key stats of the event:

  • 27% ($838 million) of the total online spending was through mobile devices
  • Shopping via mobile devices jumped 53 percent
  • Purchases made by phone, laptop or tablet jumped 21% to $3.11 billion
  • Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target were the top 5 gainers

But Alibaba’s Singles Day towers over Black Friday and Cyber Monday

The record made by Alibaba’s Singles Day – 11 November sale still stands tall. Based on this report, the Chinese ecommerce leader did a business of $14.3 billion in a single day! So even when we combine US’ online sales during Thanksgiving ($1.73 billion), Black Friday (US $2.74 billion) and Cyber Monday ($3.07 billion), China is still way ahead.

The TECHINASIA report laid out the reasons why Alibaba won, which were:

  • China’s population
  • Less competition
  • Better discounts
  • Surge of m-commerce

No borders for online sellers

Which national or global marketplace leader will survive is still unclear. But great news for sellers is that there are no borders in the online retail space as long as you have a great product backed by amazing service and selling ethics. This year Indian online sellers got to participate in American Black Friday sale thanks to Amazon. Alibaba is too enabling sellers to sell overseas.

So Indian online sellers what are you waiting for? With 2015 coming to an end, buckle up and start planning to make the most of India’s Big Billion Days, US’s Black Friday & Cyber Monday and China’s Singles Day 2016!
