Amazon’s Great Indian Festive sale gathering pace

Amazon's opening day of the Great Indian Festive sale was proclaimed as the “biggest day in the history of Amazon India” and it did not have to wait long to break even more sales records.

The ecommerce major now insists that it has witnessed “the biggest day in the history of Amazon Fashion in India”, “the biggest day ever in the history of the Home & Kitchen department on Amazon.in”, “the biggest day in the history of the Television category on Amazon.in” and just when you thought things could not get any bigger than this, it was also the “biggest day in the history of the Health & Personal Care department on Amazon.in”

Join us on the journey as we take a look at the key insights that contributed to Amazon's success on Day 2.

Home is where the heart is

The home and kitchen department on Amazon.in saw an 8X growth over last Diwali. In the first six hours the appliances category exceeded a weeks sales. Large appliances had a 3X sales growth compared to the Great Indian Freedom sale. Washing machines sold most, followed by AC's and refrigerators.

Entertaining the masses

On Day 2, the Television category on Amazon.in witnessed a 2.5X sales growth compared to the Great Indian Freedom Sale.

  • Customers bought TVs ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 2 lakhs (The Samsung Series 8 LED TV)
  • 32inch and 43 inches TV sets were the most popular across brands like LG, Samsung, Philips and Micromax

Video Games witnessed a 10X uplift in sales of gaming consoles and Fifa 16 was the highest pre-ordered game. The Movies section recorded a 7X spike in sales as compared to the pre-sale period and the Music category saw a 6X sales increase.

From Junk food to Health food

On day one of the Great Indian Festive sale chocolates and Indian sweets seemed to be the flavour of the moment, but a different trend was witnessed on day 2. The Nutrition supplements category contributed to more than 60% of sales which led to the Health & Personal Care department on Amazon.in witnessing a 5X jump in terms of unit sales as compared to the pre-sale period.

  • Optimum Nutrition and Nature's best were the top brands
  • The sports nutrition packs were in high demand

Sold on Gold

Over the last two days, 30% of Amazon's orders has been from Tier III towns which shows that the concerted efforts made by the company to improve Last Mile Delivery and also the opening up of multiple fulfilment centres across the country is starting to be rewarded.

Speaking of rewards, Darshan Patel hailing from Amedabad, who placed an order for a Moto E smartphone became the 1st recipient of the 1kg gold prize that Amazon is offering to lucky winners each day who shop on its app.

“It’s unbelievable! Winning this prize was so unexpected and now that I have won it, I am surprised and absolutely thrilled,” said the 21 year old Darshan on receiving the news.

Amazon received 70% of its traffic from mobile on day one of the sales, so incentives like this one are clearly working out.
