As the battle for the festive sales is under way, ecommerce giant Amazon India has announced that it has added 1 million products to its Next Day Delivery service which will allow eager customers to have the ordered goods in their hands within 24 hours.
"It would be great deals for customers, ensuring that sellers have a blockbuster time, ensuring that we provide a great experience we believe that this will be the greatest sale India has ever seen," said Amit Agarwal, head of Amazon in India.
Since last Diwali, Amazon has increased its warehouse capacity space three-fold which now stands at 5 million cubic feet. These fulfilment centres which currently totals 21 are strategically placed around the country and is helping Amazon's ability to increase the range of products for next day delivery.
With the festive sales in full swing, Amazon will benefit from the time it spent training around 25,000 sellers over the last two months. As part of the seller development programme, Amazon officials roamed around in 24 chai carts, handing out free tea and coffee while introducing new businesses to sell online. The seller development programme visited 31 cities covering over 31,000 kilometres.
Amazon also collaborated with non-governmental organisations for last mile delivery and tied up with 2,000 sellers in 50 cities to be used as pick up points. These sellers include:
While competitors like Flipkart has decided to go app-only this festive period, Amazon is using a different strategy to attract customers to use its app, by giving away upto a kilogram of gold on each of the five Great Indian Festive sale days to winners.
"Thousands of deals will be available every hour" during the five-day mega sale. "We believe that millions of new customers are going to come. Based on our experience from the last two sales, more than 60% of our customers come from Tier II and Tier III cities," said Amit Agarwal, head of Amazon in India.
