Flipkart pours resources into building the finest artificially intelligent brain

Flipkart knows that discounts and deals can only take you so far. With an aim to create a self-sufficient business, the ecommerce giant has consistently invested in cutting-edge technology.

The company plans to combine the power of big data and mobile phones in order to build the best human-like artificial brain. For the same, the company recruited senior Google executive, Mayur Datar as principal data scientist to support their active tech team.

In an interview to ET, Peeyush Ranjan, Head- Engineering, Flipkart said, “The larger problem we are tackling is how do we make sure that Flipkart is providing all the technology which enables ecommerce in India.”

Why? For the following reasons:

  • To understand customers’ need better
  • To build product portfolio based on demand
  • To predict trends
  • To bridge the gap between online and offline shopping in terms of enhancing buying experience
  • To solve buyers’ and sellers’ issues
  • To assist shoppers and enable new product discovery
  • To offer best customer service
  • To maintain their leadership position

Explaining why the above-mentioned reasons are important for Flipkart, Ranjan said, “If we understand what our users really want, that’s good for us… Understanding user affinity is an example of a problem we are thinking about. Leveraging technology to bring online shopping as close to real world shopping and maybe go a little further is the other thing we think of.”

Although no official announcement has been made about the marketplace going app-only, one can clearly see that the company is focussing on its mobile platform the most. Over the past few years, Flipkart’s engineering team has been working on creating features meant for mobiles users exclusively. ‘Image Search’ feature and social shopping platform ‘Ping’ are two such examples.

Punit Soni, Chief Product Officer – Flipkart revealed, “Image search is just a start. Increasingly you will see focus on social, predictive and real-life shopping and making sure that the difference between mobile shopping and desktop shopping is bridged.”

Let’s wait and see what Flipkart’s technologically advanced human-like brain brings next for its buyers and sellers.
