Increased sale in music category rings melodies at Amazon

Amazon India has seen a marked increase in the sale of musical instruments and related products. Reportedly, the ecommerce major has recorded nearly 20-25% increase in month-on-month growth in its music segment. Fast selling products include DJ equipment like mixers, studio monitors, headphones and mikes.

With only a surprising 700 plus number of physical stores for music and related equipment in India, Amazon is targeting small towns and cities, which may not have proper outlets. The ecommerce site is seeing a spurt in sale of audio CDs, which is a part of the music store.

The music category on Amazon

Spotting a scarcity of stores that sell music equipment in India, Amazon launched its Musical Instruments and Professional Audio segment in November 2014. Samir Kumar, Director of Category Management in Amazon had remarked, “At several occasions in the past, our interactions with customers have pointed to the fact that they face an inherent challenge in purchasing musical instruments mainly due to the limited selection and information available at any one place.”

According to a release, Amazon said that they would sell musical instruments, DJ equipment and musical accessories from more than 40 global and local brands. Customers can pick from guitars, keyboards instruments, and percussion instruments to string instruments, wind instruments and Indian traditional instruments. Apart from that, the store will also stock spare parts and accessories.

The buyers come from….

Amazon is seeing high demands and sale from unlikely places like Kottayam in Kerala, Karwar, in Karnataka, Bodinayakanur in Tamil Nadu. These are small towns that are not likely to be heard of. This proves Amazon’s premise that there are not many offline stores for musical instruments in India. There will certainly be musically inclined and talented folks across the country, and a lack of stores should not stop them from pursuing their interests.

Contest to promote upcoming musical talent

Amazon is tying up with Sennheiser, a German company that manufactures consumer audio products, in conducting a promotional contest. The contest is open to all amateur and semi-professional bands performing in all genres like blues, pop, rock, or fusion. The online contest (a first of its kind in India), will be judged by eminent musicians Salim – Sulaiman and Shankar Ehsaan Loy, and online voting.

It appears as though Amazon’s music category is here to stay. The ecommerce site is already leading the pack as one of the most popular shopping destinations in India. With the competition hot as ever, online sellers keep coming up with unique ideas to up the ante. As demand is always on the rise, things can only get better for sellers.
