Online Groceries Strengthen Delivery to Scale Up

Just like Facebook took over the world before we could even understand the networking service completely; eCommerce is spreading its wings as wide as it can to take over every business sector that can operate online.

Just like other segments, online grocery has been getting popular with the Indian audience. With timely delivery becoming a crucial part of the business, eCom giants have no other option than to come up with ideas that will shorten the chain of delivery and also save more money. Where other companies are busy focusing on increasing the number of fulfillment centres so to involve less people in the delivery process and cut down on the timing of actual delivery; Amazon has come up with a new programme – ‘Kirana Now’ to ensure that the deliveries are quick. With ‘quick’ being the focus, the target is to deliver orders within 2 to 4 hours.

What are the benefits of ‘Kirana Now’?

With Kirana Now –

i) There will be no need to spend time, energy and money on building warehouses

ii) Local stores will get more business (possibility of local store’s business increasing ten times cannot be denied)

Is the programme active?

At the initial stage, Amazon said that the programme will be active only in selected areas of Bengaluru, but only if these orders are mobile based.

What are Entrepreneurs saying?

Karan Mehrotra, co-founder and CEO of LocalBanya says, “Over the last 15 years, modern trade and other unorganised players have pumped in 90% of their investment into first-mile supply chain and inventory-based warehouses, whereas nobody had really been able to crack the last-mile distribution and delivery to the customer. Instead of competing, we’d rather partner with them and focus on innovating in the areas that need attention in the industry,”

ZopNow, one of the largest online grocery stores in Bengaluru has also shifted its focus to delivery to hyper-city stores. Co-founder of ZopNow, Mukesh Singh feels this is more capital efficient if thought from the company’s pint of view.  Earlier the store’s focus was on owning warehouses.

This new twist in the eCommerce world is surely going to turn small business owners into marketplace sellers and definitely adding heaps of money to their revenue.
