Last year, Flipkart stopped delivery to customers in UP for goods above Rs 10,000. Now, another major ecommerce player Amazon has done the same and will not be delivering goods above Rs 5,000 to UP postal codes.
Although Amazon has not officially announced this development, its already in practice and looks like Amazon wants to keep the risk as low as possible, considering the limit lower than Flipkart.
An example on Trak.in talks about the error message displayed by Amazon when an order was placed with the postal code of UP- Sorry, this item can’t be shipped to your selected address. Learn more. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order. ”
A quick visit to the “Learn More” sections gives the standard reasons for not being able to confirm the order and not the explicit reason that UP customers cannot be serviced.
Sources close to Amazon say that the drastic step was taken due to the multiple problems they have to face with deliveries to UP.
“We’ve had many instances of items ordered from fake addresses. It affects everyone in the supply chain, because a lot of money and time is invested in catering to such orders. Just-for-fun orders are hurting e-commerce,” said a courier operator, which handles orders from various e-commerce portals, including Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal.
Amazon does not have its own delivery network in UP and depends on regular couriers. One of them mentioned that they make about 300 deliveries every day, out of which around 90% are honoured. “This is their business decision and they will be best able to tell why they are doing this,” added the courier operator.
In general, the UP market is not very high on trustworthiness with the sellers. There have been multiple instances of delivery and payment hassles, which have led to sellers and marketplaces opting for such measures.
Whether it will really hamper Amazon’s popularity with sellers is doubtful. Even a 10% of orders not being honoured translate to so many sellers not getting their due. So this could work out in favour of sellers to avoid hassles in their sales.
