Walmart India has launched its B2B e-commerce platform, bestpricewholesale.co.in, according to a PTI report. The registered members of Best Price Modern Wholesale stores in Hyderabad and Lucknow will now be able to use the services. Walmart’s decision to launch pilot projects in Lucknow and Hyderabad was announced last month, the success of which would determine the service being extended to other cities as well by January 2015.
The site offers various product categories like apparel, home care, mobile, electronics, office supplies, beverages, furniture, packaged goods and imported goods. However, a Best Price membership is essential to browse through products on the site.
This venture is an online extension of its offline cash-and-carry format. Walmart India president & CEO Krish Iyer earlier mentioned that members within a 40 km radius would be able to purchase products from the site and get them delivered or picked up from the closest cash-and-carry store.
Currently, Walmart operates 20 “Best Price Modern Wholesale” stores spread across eight states in India. A Reuters report indicates that it hopes to open 50 more such offline stores in the next 4-5 years.
As FDI is currently banned in B2C e-commerce in India, Walmart, like Amazon, has been waiting for FDI regulations to be relaxed. Iyer mentioned in an interview to Times of India last month that they would explore it when the opportunity arises, there is no clear indication about Walmart’s intentions to launch a B2C e-commerce platform in India.
For retailers looking to buy in bulk, an online wholesale platform would be most helpful and time saving. If you fall within the 40 km radius, your purchases would even get delivered to your doorstep. If this is something that would be useful for you, signing up with Best Price is the first step as only members can browse through the site for purchases. Walmart is a trusted global brand so a service from them would be of industry standards.
