Snapdeal is getting a makeover; just what the doctor ordered to fight competition?

Editor | Mar 23, 2021

With Flipkart and Amazon dominating the Indian ecommerce industry as of now, Snapdeal is looking to give its brand a face-lift to retain market share that is slipping away gradually.

A brand makeover is a marketing strategy often used by companies to attract customers, gain brand clarity, create new visual identity and revive business. For instance, in May 2015, ecommerce leader Flipkart had changed its logo and brand identity for the second time.

What’s set to change for Snapdeal?

As per the news report, Snapdeal is working on:

  • A new logo with close resemblance to file hosting service Dropbox’s logo
  • A fresh colour theme will replace the current blue and red theme
  • A new tagline

Snapdeal will unveil this new look before Diwali, the peak online shopping period.

The Branding Project save Snapdeal

Last week IOS reported how Snapdeal has reserved a whopping Rs 200 crores for festive season marketing campaign. This brand overhaul appears to be a part of the 360-degree marketing campaign, to be released around the festive season.

Rohit Bansal, co-founder of Snapdeal is spearheading this rebranding project and is working along with advertising agency McCann Erickson.

Snapdeal’s struggle to survive amidst tough competition

Snapdeal that started as a daily deals website in 2010, transitioned into an online marketplace in September 2011. While that makeover worked for few years, the marketplace started struggling after American ecommerce giant Amazon gained significant growth momentum in India.

The etailer not only lost its leadership position to Amazon, but also lost major deals to its other rivals, like Flipkart grabbing Jabong and Pigeon Express acquiring GoJavas.

While CEO Kunal Bahl believes that his company is close to profitability, experts believe that it is close to fading out.

Snapdeal is definitely trying to stay afloat. Ahead of the festive season, the marketplace launched next-day delivery service in 104 cities, introduced Recurring Campaigns, started buyer-seller chat facility and opened 6 logistics hubs.
