Snapdeal launches platform in 12 languages to attract 130 million Indian customers

With a view to tap a further 130 million potential shoppers in India, who prefer to surf and shop on the internet in their local dialect, ecommerce marketplace Snapdeal has launched its platform in an impressive 11 regional languages. This is a huge upgrade from the interface which is currently viewed in English. It is widely reported that language is a major barrier for India’s ecommerce dream to truly unfold, so this is a fantastic step taken by Snapdeal on the localisation front.

Snapdeal’s latest innovative offering was developed on Snaplite, which is Snapdeal’s website for mobile browsing. The advantage of using this technology is that it consumes 85% less bandwidth, allowing it to load on average 25% faster than other mobile platforms. This will be beneficial to attract the ever growing smartphone user segment.

The platform will allow users to to choose a language for:

  • Browsing
  • Purchasing
  • Order tracking

The multi-lingual portal will be available in Hindi and Telugu on the mobile for now. By 26th January 2016 (India’s Republic Day), Snapdeal will expand the content to feature the other languages.

Snapdeal will eventually be available in the following 12 languages:

  • English
  • Hindi
  • Telugu
  • Gujarati
  • Tamil
  • Marathi
  • Bengali
  • Kannada
  • Malayalam
  • Oriya
  • Assamese
  • Punjabi
