Leading ecommerce bellwether, Flipkart is planning to expand its operations and enter the field of commercial logistics. Come March 2016, Flipkart will be ready to provide smaller ecommerce companies with logistics facilities. The company is strengthening its logistics wing to support its plan. In September, Flipkart bought back its logistics arm eKart from WS Retail.
A Flipkart spokesperson said, “Flipkart is already talking to a few firms and logistics services for the other companies will start from the next quarter.”
Flipkart is planning to invest nearly Rs. 16,500 crores to set up warehouses and get vehicles.
“Our scale and technology in operations will allow us to open the services to all companies, both large and small,” said the company in a statement.
The online marketplace has also purchased stakes in MapmyIndia (a digital map making service) and BlackBuck (an online freight booking company).
Leading ecommerce companies like Snapdeal and Amazon have their own logistics facilities. However, most of the smaller companies are depending on third party service providers for their delivery needs. For Flipkart, entering the logistics sector will be adding another feather to its cap of services.
The trust factor in the company is also likely to be high. Being an online marketplace, Flipkart is likelier to understand the problems of other companies, and act accordingly. Logistics being an important factor in ecommerce, particularly the last mile, Flipkart will be smart enough to identify loopholes in the system and look at solutions to plug them.
