Ecommerce leader, Flipkart became the most searched term on Google in India, in 2015, after overtaking Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corp (IRCTC) who held the position for the last two consecutive years. Recently a report emerged that the IRCTC who started online selling in 2013, had emerged as the largest online marketplace in India, so this is Flipkart’s turn to say touché.
What is interesting to note is that Snapdeal which held the fourth position last year slipped down to fifth, while Amazon who just about made the cut last year in tenth placed improved by six positions to leapfrog over Snapdeal into fourth. This year saw yet another ecommerce marketplace sneak into the list. That honour goes to Alibaba backed Paytm. Although it came in at tenth, its position is almost sure to rise next year, having tied up with IRCTC to facilitate online catering payments. Amazon who recently achieved the highest traffic ranking for retail in India is also set to improve its position next year.
Google who recently pulled the plug on its rather successful Great Online Shopping Festival, citing too much competition from online marketplaces, helped Flipkart develop and relaunch its mobile website. After this latest search engine news, Google seems to have yet again become a knight in shining armour for the online marketplace.
