Indian shoppers are an app-happy lot. A study conducted by app analytics company AppAnnie has given out a list of the top ten retail apps downloaded in India. The study has shown a rise of a whopping 440% in the rate of app downloads in a year (of the top ten retail apps).
Interestingly, India based ecommerce marketplace Flipkart and Paytm have bagged the top two slots, and US based Amazon has managed third rank. India has also beat other countries like US and China in its pace of app downloads.
With more consumers opting to buy smartphones in India, the number of smartphone users has gone up to 192 million. The number of mobile internet users stands at 180 million. Network service providers are battling with each other to provide the cheapest plans. All this has influenced the high app download rate. The study has also observed that this is the first time that India has beaten the US in the number of retail app downloads.
In terms of the number of active users per app, online marketplace Flipkart again leads the herd, followed by Paytm. Voonik has debuted in the list this year, however, it doesn’t fare too well in terms of active users.
Six out of the ten featured companies are following a mobile first policy. Five of the ten companies are apparel only, while the other five belong to the general merchandise category.
The app based discounts that most companies are offering has a major role to play in the popularity of apps. Smartphone penetration is yet to grow, indicating the huge potential in this sector. While companies have managed to get a foothold, there is much more to be achieved in the mobile app segment. This creates great scope for online sellers to tap.
