We recently witnessed the closing down of Google’s highly successful December sale called the Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF). This was apparently due to competition of too many ecommerce festive sales sprouting up. This however has not prevented others from spreading their wings across continents.
Ebay who recently announced its big ecommerce plans for India, started its Black Friday sale in the country on 20th November and it will continue all the way through until 30th November. It is offering the Indian online shopper International brands with huge cut price discounts.
“On eBay India we provide Indian consumers with direct and easy access to an unmatched options of deals and discounts being offered during Black Friday sale week in US. Indian shoppers can now buy the world’s hottest labels and coolest brands from the comfort of their home at unbelievable Indian prices,” said Navin Mistry, eBay India Head (Retail Exports and Lifestyle Category).
The Black Friday sale which is traditionally celebrated in the US one day after Thanksgiving has become a massive shopping frenzy in the build up to Christmas. This year across the world it will be celebrated on 27th November. Recently, Alibaba broke the online shopping day record on Singles Day. You can compare the Black Friday sale to the Singles Day sale over the last five years in this IOS report.
Ebay’s initiative to bring the Black Friday sale to India for an extended period clearly highlights the trend that is slowly emerging in the country for the popularity of online festive sales. Last year, ecommerce marketplaces such as Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon had a one day Diwali sale, which was increased this year to five days and further sales are set to continue up to December end.
How Black Friday compares against the likes of the Big Billion Days Sale or the Great Indian Festive Sale in the years to come remains to be seen, but as Indian online sellers the opportunity to sell on multiple platforms at more events can only prove to be a pleasant one. So grab your calendars and start planning!
