Amazon taking Indian ecommerce philosophy to the world

Editor | Jun 23, 2021

From Yoga to Chess, the western world has constantly been borrowing from Indian culture over the centuries. The latest teachings to be exported to the west will include Amazon’s experiences in ecommerce. This will help it to restructure its logistics arm as it aims to cut costs abroad in countries as diverse as Mexico, Brazil, USA and Great Britain.

Long and winding road

Amazon’s journey in India since it made its long expected entry two years ago has been an unpredictable and bumpy one in more ways than one. Due to strict FDI rules, Amazon has had to play the role of marketplace instead of selling its own products. This has enabled it to build up a strong rapport with its sellers, where it has picked up a lot of best practices and procedures to help it evolve.

Delivery dilemma

Unavoidable environmental aspects such as busy roads and overcrowded towns is what ecommerce marketplaces have to face on a regular basis in India. This forces them to innovate in order to survive. For example in Mumbai, Flipkart has piggy-backed of the age old traditional dabbawalas to speed up delivery. It is also not uncommon for the likes of Snapdeal, Flipkart and Amazon to use motor bike delivery boys to zip in and out of traffic for speedy delivery, instead of utilising big trucks.

Amazon India services that could be copied and pasted overseas include:

  • Easy Ship (which removes costs of packing, storing and individually shipping orders)
  • Seller Flex (where sellers are are trained to pack, label and deliver goods to customers without having to route them through Amazon warehouses)

“It’s not just that we learn from the big brothers like North America. There is so much focus on India and the kind of growth that is happening here… People say, if it works for them, let’s see what we can pick and learn,” said Akhil Saxena, director of operations, Amazon India.
