Amazon India to Organize Small Business Days 2021 on July 2-4th

eCommerce giant Amazon has announced to host ‘Small Business Days 2021’ from July 2-4, 2021, in its attempt to encourage sellers to get over the economic setback caused by COVID-19 and boost the local economy. The event is likely to attend by lakhs of manufacturers, thousands of startups, small brand owners, launchpad brands, 6.8 lakhs of women entrepreneurs from Amazon Saheli, 12 lakhs of artisans, and weavers from Amazon Karigar, and 50,000 neighborhood stores from the Local Shops on Amazon Programmers.

Through the three-day sale event, Amazon offers an opportunity for several categories of sellers to discover, purchase as well as take advantage of several offers and deals on products related to immunity boosters, monsoon essentials, regional handicrafts, at-home fitness supplies and much more.

Pranav Bhasin, Amazon India Director (MSME and Selling Partner Experience), said.”India tries to get back on track post the impact of the COVID-19 second wave; the company is prioritizing its efforts to help small businesses bounce back from the economic disruption.

"Towards this, we are hosting Amazon Small Business Days to help generate customer demand for offerings from small sellers on the Amazon India marketplace, thus helping them to get their business back on track," he added. 8 other small companies also step forward to scale up online business in India. Reportedly, the outbreak of COVID-19 has hit the local economy severely, jeopardizing the futures of millions of MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) in the country.

Nitin Gadkari, the minister for MSMEs, expressed his concerns on the current situation and said,” MSMEs are the backbone of our economy, contributing to nearly 30 percent of the country's GDP and half of its exports. Around six crore MSME units across the country employ over 11 crore persons. MSMEs contribute significantly to the country's socio-economic growth by fostering entrepreneurship and generating enormous employment opportunities.”

Technology will play a key role in the success of MSMEs and increase the contribution of MSMEs' share to the country's GDP.

"It is important to accelerate the growth of MSMEs, especially after the disruptions caused by COVID-19, and I congratulate Amazon for hosting Small Business Day to help generate customer demand for their products and revive the livelihoods of lakhs of MSMEs in the country," Gadkari said.

Recently, the government of India has proposed amendments to the Consumer Protection for eCommerce Rules 2020, citing public comments on banning flash and mis-spelling of goods and services on various eCommerce platforms. The amendment has a proposal for the appointment of a chief compliance officer and resident grievance officer.

The amendment also focuses on making the norms regarding defining the country of origin strictly as a clear filter mechanism that helps in identifying and ensuring fair and equal treatment for domestic manufacturers and suppliers.

In addition, a “Fall-back liability” for every eCommerce platform is proposed to safeguard the interests of buyers in case of delivery failure due to seller negligence in fulfilling the duties as prescribed by the eCommerce platform.

According to industry veterans and experts, the proposed amendments could have a deeper impact on online sellers, including the big platforms like Flipkart and Amazon.
