Amazon India, on November 4, announced that the company had signed MOU with the Silk Mark Organization of India (SMOI). As a part of the MoU, Amazon launches the exclusive silk mark store labeled with the collection of silk mark labeled products through multiple sellers connected with the company.
SMOI is a registered society initiated by the Central Silk Board (CSB), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It is headquartered in Bangalore and has thirteen silk mark chapters in and around the silk clusters of the country. The collaboration changes the lives of many weavers and craftsmen associated with more than 4,200 Silk Mark Authorized users.
The launch initially showcases over 3000 products, and customers will get access to 100% pure silk products of varied models from sarees, dress materials, salwar kameez sets, scarves, stoles, jackets, shirts, ties, etc.
With this MoU, silk mark authorized users and numerous weavers and craftsmen associated with silk mark will be a part of Amazon Karigar, a program initiated to support over 8 lakh artisans with the complete support to become successful on Amazon. It has over 20 government partners and 80+ craft clusters. Amazon has also recently launched three new emporiums to encourage over 40,000 weavers and artisans during the Great Indian Festival sale.
Sellers of SMOI can avail additional benefits for selling their products on Amazon like subsidized referral fees, personalized training for quick start, account management support, image cataloging support, increased customer visibility, and marketing support. This association will help the weavers and sellers to improve their online presence and customer base. The partnership provides both employment opportunities and recognition for the artisan’s work.
Pranav Bhasin, head of MSME Empowerment and seller experience at Amazon India, said that artisans and weavers are the key part of their community and need support to reach the potential customers and Amazon empowers and encourages them to bring all forms of Indian crafts online and expand the base of customers. He also added that the launch of silk mark labeled products is focused on enabling small and medium sellers to expand their business and allows thousands of thousands of weavers to reach millions of customers with silk mark certified products.
Silk mark certified products come with the silk mark Label. These labels are affixed only on the pure silk products by the silk mark's Authorised users. Each of the labels has a hologram with a unique number to trace back to the authorized user. The launch of the silk mark Certified products ahead of the Amazon wedding season further help the thousands of artisans improve their online sales.
Shri Rajit Ranjan Okhandiar, IFS, Vice-chairperson, and CEO of SMOI said that the Silk Mark Store on Amazon Karigar and Amazon online bazaar is in line with the Go Digital Mandate of the government and helps over 4200 authorized users of silk mark.
Since the beginning of the Amazon Karigar program in 2017, Amazon India has on boarded over 3000 master weavers, co-operatives, artisans, and APEX bodies to sell online. The program has changed the lives of over 800,000 weavers across 20 states and union territories.
