First there was Snap-Lite, then there was was Snaptrends and now there is SnapSearch. Over the last fortnight online marketplace Snapdeal has launched new initiatives with ‘Snap’ featuring prevalently.
SnapSearch seems to be a highly appropriate name, considering customers have to ‘snap’ a photo of a product they are looking for and upload the image on the platform. The site will then directly locate similar products for them to choose from. This will also prove very effective for online sellers to benchmark yourselves against the competition, by browsing through categories and doing product searches. The feature is not a path breaker for Snapdeal as Flipkart, Craftsville and Voonik had created similar offerings this year.
“We are launching it first for watches, women fashion, some categories of men’s fashion etc, and will be expanding it to other categories in the near future,” said Anand Chandrasekaran, chief product officer at Snapdeal.
SnapSearch was produced at Snapdeal’s impressive multimedia research lab, which was recently opened, in Bangalore. The highlight of the tool is the sheer breath-taking speed it takes to auto-classify the search, which is based on exemplary image recognition computing. The ecommerce marketplace had recently launched a feature called Find My Style, which uses technically sound algorithms to construct customers desires. SnapSearch ties in spectacularly with this technology. It is understood that computer vision is the main driver behind building this artificial intelligence machine, which has the power to identify images and showcase results.
