According to an analysis done by Browntape Technologies, South Indian metros – Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai – contributed more to ecommerce sales than the northern Indian metros – Delhi and Mumbai.
(Browntape is an ecommerce enabler that helps retailers sell online on multiple marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, etc. marketplaces in India.)
In order to tap into the potential of customers in the South and keep up with their demands, online marketplace Flipkart has launched a fulfillment center near Chennai. The ecommerce giant now has 15 fulfillment centers across the country amounting to a storage capacity of 2.5 million cubic feet.
“Owing to an increased demand and with a consistent focus on customer delight, the company has invested in improving the supply chain in Chennai and surrounding areas,” said the company.
A closer fulfillment center is a crucial solution in the last mile delivery issue. With faster delivery to customers, the online portal can fulfill its promise of convenient ecommerce services to its sellers. With a range of inbound and outbound functions associated with the fulfillment facility, there will be seamless management for sellers and customers.
Binny Bansal, COO & Co-founder, Flipkart, said, “Tamil Nadu, is one of the fastest growing states that has seen an upsurge in demand for technology products like mobile phones. It was hence important to invest in the existing feeder capabilities and serve the ever rising demand from customers.”
With its ambitious plan of onboarding more sellers on its platform, the ecommerce giant wants to expand product categories and range to provide more choices to customers. A critical aspect of customer satisfaction is delivery, the kinks of which can be eased out to a certain extent with more fulfillment centers for spreading out the storage and distribution.
As we are inching closer to the festive season, everyone is polishing up their supply chain and logistics. Last year, related problems were many – delayed orders, cancelled orders, parcels piled up in warehouses etc.
Flipkart is not the only to think on these lines. Snapdeal announced dedicated investment to the tune of $100 million to strengthen its logistics. While Amazon recently opened its latest warehouse in Telangana to handle its fulfillment service to sellers.
